2013 Ford Escape

The Ford Escape is one of the most popular compact crossover SUVs in the US. Let’s take a look at some of the changes coming to the 2014 Ford Escape.

Changes to Model Series:

The 2014 model will only be offered in three trim series, the S, SE and the Titanium. For 2014, the SEL will no longer be available. Let’s check out the new standard additions to each.

Packaging/ Standard Features Changes

Perhaps the biggest change is that all 2014 Escapes will come standard with a rear view camera. In addition, SYNC (integrated in-vehicle communications and entertainment system) will now be standard on all Escapes. From a packaging standpoint, there are also a few things to point out for the 2014 Model Year:

  • The SE convenience package will include Dual-Zone electronic temperature control, rear parking aid sensors and MyFord Touch.
  • The Titanium Technology package will include HID headlamps with signature lighting, active park assist, BLIS (blind spot information system), rain-sensing wipers.

Mechanical Changes:

For 2014 the 1.6 L EcoBoost will become standard on the Titanium ( FWD: 23 City / 33 Hwy  -  4WD: 22 City / 30 Hwy).  Drivers will still have the option to add the 2.0 L EcoBoost to a Titanium, in addition to a supplemental heater is also now option on  both EcoBoost engines.

Safety and Security Changes:

Rear parking aid sensors will now be standard on all Titanium models, while a rear view camera will be standard on all series.

Exterior Changes to the Titanium Package:

18″ machined aluminum wheels will be standard to the Titanium package.

Interior Comfort:

The SE package will now include a standard 10-way power driver seat, which does away with the old SE 6-way manual driver seat. Full-leather seats will now be standard on the Titanium package.

Functional Changes:

A power converter will now be standard on the Titanium package.

So while the Escape may not see any major body style changes for 2014, there are some very worthy changes coming that will keep this much loved crossover pleasing the masses. 2014 models will start showing up in the last quarter of 2014, so stay tuned!

Like all good bloggers should, we follow our search traffic, looking into what drives people to our site. One subject that seems to be very popular are questions surrounding the Energi line and electric vehicles, most specifically questions around charging the vehicles, what is included, what you can and can not do. In this blog article I will attempt to answer some of these commonly asked questions.

Energi Plug-in Hybrid FAQ

Currently, Ford offers two vehicles in this class, The Ford Fusion Energi and the Ford C-Max Energi.

What are the c-max energi and fusion energi charging time on 120V?

You can recharge overnight in 7 hours using a standard 120-volt outlet

What is the charging time on 240V?

Recharged in just 2.5 hours using the available UL-listed, weather-resistant Leviton®(1) 240-volt home charging station recommended by Ford, which can be purchased and installed through a partnership with the Best Buy Geek Squad.

Does the vehicle come with a cord?

Yes, a 120V charging cord does come with the vehicle. The 240-volt charging station is offered separately through Best Buy.

Can i plug directly in to a 220V outlet?

While many customers have a 220v outlet in their home or garage, there is currently not a way to plug directly into a 220v outlet.

What charger does Ford recommend?

We recommend a 240-volt charging station by Leviton that can be purchased and installed through a partnership Ford has Best Buy and the Geek Squad. The charging station will be installed and serviced through the Geek Squad.

How much does it cost, on average, per charge?

With a rate of about about 8.5 kWh for a full charge, and at an average of 12 cents per kWh.  The cost to fully charge the battery would be about one dollar. Through the MyFord Mobile, Ford’s smartphone app, you will be able to time charging sessions to take advantage of the off peak charging times. Contact your local electric company for more information on off peak vs. on peak times and rates.

Is there any way I can take advantage of solar power?

Absolutely. Ford has coordinated with SunPower® to offer plugin vehicle customers the opportunity to purchase a rooftop solar power system at a special price through the Drive Green for LifeTM program;

Where are there charging stations near me?

You can check out this link to locate public and private charging stations near you. http://www.afdc.energy.gov/locator/stations/

While about 85% of charging stations are free, some private locations may charge a fee per charge, or a parking type of fee. Costs may vary.

What happens when the vehicle runs out of charge or if I forget to plug it in?

The Fusion Energi and CMax Energi are plug in hybrids. Effectively, these vehicles use the electric charge to travel mostly on electric power, until gasoline assistance is required. Even after the electric reserves are exhausted, the vehicle goes into a hybrid mode where a combination of gas or electricity is used to power the vehicle. In short, if you forget to plug it in or run out of charge, you still have gasoline power and battery reserve power available to travel to your destination.

Plugged In – The C-Max Energi From Acton Ford

One of the most enjoyable parts of my job as the blogger for Acton Ford is that I get to learn about, and test drive, a variety of vehicles. Today it is the new 2013 Ford Fusion Energi. There is one on the lot ready to test drive!  Though I am very intrigued by hybrid vehicles, as a consumer creature comforts, safety, reliability, and, of course, fuel economy are also very important. Hybrids were out of reach for some in the past, mostly due to cost. But as they become more  common in the marketplace, the price is starting to be more inline with mid priced vehicles. The Energi line is Ford’s first plug-in hybrid line.

My first impressions of the Fusion Energi:

On first walk around I see a sharp looking mid-range sedan. One thing I did notice is two gas caps on the drive’s side. One is behind the back seat door, the other placed right in front of the driver door. Being a plug-in hybrid means that it runs on a battery, rechargeable by plugging in, and a gas engine. This is a plus because a plug-in hybrid comes with a larger battery than a traditional hybrid, allowing for more supplemental battery power. The Fusion Energy can act as a traditional hybrid, but to get the most out of it, you really want to utilize the plug-in charging feature.

This brings me to charging time. I am a busy person, mother, blogger, business owner, always on the go.  The charge time on the Fusion Energi with a traditional 120V outlet is 7 hours. You can get a special charging station installed, a 240V capacity, that will charge in 2.5 hours. While I love the idea of plugging in, it has to be convenient for me to do it. The charging station can be installed for an additional fee through a program with Best Buy, which I would consider if I were to purchase an Energi, as quick charge time would be very important.  The longer charge time may work for some, but you have to plug in to get all the benefits. Another point to keep in mind is you need a place to charge the Fusion Energi. This could be a con for some.

No denying, it is a sharp looking car. The view from the inside is not unlike many other cars in it’s class. The first thing I do when getting in a car is to adjust seating.  The automatic adjustable seats have plenty of ways to adjust for comfort. Being on the shorter side, I was able to find a comfortable driving position in no time. I prefer to be up higher than most cars allow. The seats were able to be adjusted to a height I was very comfortable with. Even at my height, I did feel the headroom was a bit lacking, though this may not be an issue for everyone. The Fusion Energi does have 39 inches of headroom in the front and 37 inches in back. Just a comparison, the C-Max Energi has 41 inches of head room, and I could tell a big difference when I test drove the C-Max version of the Energi.

The dash has a large, wrap around feel. I prefer a more open feel in my vehicle, but again, may suit some just fine. Everything did seem in easy reach and viewable. I really like the touch screen panel on the console that controls every aspect of the car from a rear view camera when backing up, to the GPS, to climate and audio controls. It was easy to navigate and very responsive. The shift also sits in the middle, in front of two cup holders, a comfortable spot for me. The cup holders were in an easily accessible spot, and appear to be hold your beverage of choice very securely. I also liked the keyless start, but that could take a bit of time for some to get used to.

Easing it out of the parking lot was an effortless exercise, interior noise was at a minimum.  The windows appeared a bit small, limiting my range of view somewhat.  The only time I noticed an increase in noise level was when accelerating up a hill, the car appeared to have to work a bit. In basic level driving conditions I found the car to respond quickly, and handle effortlessly. The instrument panel of the Fusion Energi is full of customizable features that can be very handy for learning about your fuel economy and driving habits, but are likely most useful when at a full stop.

The Fusion offers leather seats, and ample passenger leg room, 44 inches in the front and 38 inches in the rear. While I am height challenged, I did note that not only was I comfortable with the room in back, there was plenty of additional room to accommodate taller passengers as well.

As with most hybrids, the battery does take up some trunk space, but with the 60/40 split fold down rear seats, there is still plenty of room to pack for a road trip, making this mid-sized sedan a very viable option for a lot of people.

This car is loaded with features and it would take a while to go over all of them. Some useful ones are the front and rear sensors, helpful when parking. The adaptive cruise control works to keep a safe distance between you and other vehicles and will automatically adjust your speed to do so if cruise control is on. Leather seats are standard on the Fusion Energi, as are heated seats and individual climate controls. Voice activated navigation and a very handy back up camera are two of my favorite features.

The other thing I like about the Energi is that it can be used as a plug-in hybrid, or a traditional hybrid. This is an ideal commuter car. One thing that causes me a bit of pause is the price increase over the regular Fusion hybrid.  The difference in price may well be worth it to those with a shorter commute that could often utilize solely battery power, not even tapping into the gas tank unless needed. Fortunately, the available tax credits may make economic sense for many drivers. For those that like a comfortable mid-sized sedan, and have an interest in fuel economy and driving “Green,” the Ford Fusion Energi is a very viable option.

Charging Questions – Fusion Energi and C-Max Energi

{ 2 comments }

The Ford Focus was introduced in 1998, and fast became one of the most popular compact cars in the United States. Ford has souped up the Focus with the latest ST version. The Focus ST is really a car built for performance, and this can be seen in man of it’s features, all the way down to the tires. The Focus ST comes standard with 235/40/ 18 Goodyear Eagle F1 tires, which focus on handling and performance on the road. While this can enhance the driving experience of the Focus ST during many months of the year, when winter rolls around, you may be left with your tires spinning, literally. The standard Y-rated summer tire is great for traction on the open road, but just can not give the performance you may expect, and need, during the changing seasons of New England.  At the request of one of our Facebook fans, I will cover 3 options for all weather tires that will enhance handling and traction in the winter months, and all year around. It is important to note that when comparing tire options, this is a fairly specialized size and performance rating of tire. Therefore, many of the consumer tire reviews that you may find on the internet may not apply specifically to this car. Our experts recommend one of the following options. For more information or pricing, contact one of our tire experts.

1. Continental Extreme Contact DWS 235/40/18 95Y

The Continental Extreme Contact DWS is an all season performance tire. With proper maintenance and inflation, it has an expected tread life of about 50,000 miles.  From a design standpoint, this tire is has traction grooves on the outer patter edges (shown on the left in the picture) to increase performance in the snow. The tire also carries a 60 day satisfaction guarantee through the manufacturer, in addition to limited road hazard protection against cuts, snags and road debris. When paired with the Focus ST, this tire maintains the intended performance characteristics of the car, while improving traction in wet and snowy conditions. Because of the specialty nature of this tire, usually a day or two advanced notice is required for order. This tire also qualifies for our Low Price Tire Guarantee and is our #1 pick for the Ford Focus ST!

2.  Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus 235/40/18 91Y

Our second all season recommendation for the Ford Focus ST is the Michelin Pilot Sport AS Plus. Backed by the quality, comfort and reliability of the Michelin Brand, this tire provides exceptional traction on wet roads by channeling moisture away from the center treads through a V – like tread design. This tire is backed by a 45,000 mile tread wear warranty along with Michelin road service and a 30 day satisfaction guarantee (see Michelin for details). This tire comes in at #2 on our list for New England weather. Although it is a strong performing tire on wet and dry roads, we prefer the tread design of the Continental for performance in the snow.

3. Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D 235/40/18 95W

Our #3 choice for the Focus ST is actually our #1 choice for a winter only tire. For drivers that want to maintain some of the performance characteristics, while having two sets of seasonal tires, this is an excellent choice. Like many snow tires, the performance rating on this tire is less than the manufacturers specification, so be sure to research this before making this selection. However for a snow tire, this tire is fairly quiet on the highway as a result of its jointless band design.  From a traction and tread standpoint, this tire isn’t quite as aggressive as all the other snow tires on the market, which makes it a nice choice for the performance oriented Focus ST. This tire is typically available seasonally from October through February, depending on demand. Like all of our name brand tires, this is also backed by the low price tire guarantee.
