DEARBORN, Michigan — The 2013 Ford C-Max Hybrid beats the Toyota Prius V on fuel economy, said Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday.

The company says the C-Max Hybrid will return 47 mpg in the city and on the highway, with a combined rating of 47.

“The certification is significant because it makes C-Max Hybrid the first hybrid vehicle to offer 47 mpg across the board,” said Ford in a statement.

The 2012 Toyota Prius V returns 44 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway for a combined rating of 42 mpg, according to the EPA.

“An overall range of 550 miles is expected, making this the first hybrid vehicle that can drive from Sacramento to San Diego on a single tank according to Ford. The C-MAX Energi is supposed to get a 95 MPGe combined rating according to Ford. It starts at $25,995, undercutting its largest competitor, the Prius V, by $1,300.

The power comes from a 2.0-liter Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder engine combined with a battery-driven electric motor, which net the car 188 hp. That measures in at 50 more horsepower than the Prius plug-in hybrid.’
