Last week we highlighted the Ford C-Max Energi Plug-In Hybrid on the blog. This week we will take a look at another model in the Energi family, the Ford Fusion Energi Plug-In Hybrid.
While the inner workings under the hood may look very similar to the C-Max Energi, in fact they both use the same powertrain, there are some distinct differences in the vehicle itself. The Fusion aims to be the most fuel efficient mid-sized sedan on the market. The C-Max Energi boasts lots of useful cargo space, a higher ride, and makes a great commuter, or around town vehicle. The Fusion, being a mid-sized sedan, will appeal to a different audience, but will keep all of the great energy efficient benefits of the new Energi line of vehicles.

What is a plug in hybrid?
A plug in hybrid is a vehicle that uses a gasoline engine in conjunction with or independently of an electric motor. The plug in hybrid is charged on a 120 Volt cord or 240v charging station, allowing customers to use electricity to charge the hybrid vehicle’s electric battery. Once the battery power is fully utilized, the batteries may also be recharged through the capture of braking energy under gasoline or electric power.
How long does it take to fully charge the Fusion Energi?
The Fusion Energi allows for 120 and 240 volt charging. A 120-volt convenience cord is standard with the Energi. It takes approximately 7 hours to fully charge at 120 volts. Another option is the 240-volt Home Charging Station. The Station is portable and can be plugged into a 240-volt outlet. A full charge at 240-volts takes about 2.5 hours. This Home Charging Station is offered through a collaboration between Ford and Best Buy.
How long can the Fusion Energi travel strictly on electrical power?
The Energi can travel up to 21 miles in EV (all-electric) mode.
Does the Fusion Energi also run on gas?
Yes. The Energi can operate on the gasoline engine or the electric traction motor. When the lithium-ion battery has been drained, or certain other conditions have been met, the Energi will switch over to hybrid operation using the gasoline engine, working separately, or with the electric motor for optimal fuel efficiency.
Can I charge it at home?
Yes. Ford has partnered with Best Buy to offer the option to install a 240-volt Home Charging Station in your home for the convenience of home charging.
What are the state and federal tax incentives for purchasing a hybrid in Massachusetts?
Some consumers in the US are eligible to receive $3,750 of federal tax credits for buying the Fusion Energi (Nearly $1250 more in credits than the Toyota Prius Plug In). There may be additional tax credits available in the state of Massachusetts. Please check with a qualified accountant for further information. Also, for more information, visit fueleconomy.gov
How does maintenance differ on this vehicle versus another?
Any vehicle operating in hybrid or electric mode will, by it’s very nature, put less wear and tear on the traditional engine parts than with a solely gas powered engine. This can mean less repair costs down the road. From a maintenance standpoint, the Fusion Energi is equipped with an intelligent oil life monitor that monitors engine use, idle time and other factors to determine when maintenance is required. As with many hybrid vehicles, the regenerative braking systems can also equate to longer brake life, depending on driving habits. The electrical motor and lithium-ion batter are very specialized systems that require trained Ford technicians to service them.
How much does the Fusion Energi Cost?
The 2013 Fusion Energi has a starting cost of $38,700 MSRP.
How many miles per gallon does the Fusion Energi get?
The Fusion Energi is rated for 100 combined MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivilant), with an average of 108 MPGe city/92 MPGe highway. MPGe is the equivalent measure of gasoline fuel efficiency for electric mode operation.
When will the Fusion Energi be available at Acton Ford?
The 2013 Fusion Energi is available for retail order through Acton Ford now. Stock models will be available shortly. The dealership will also have a demonstrator model available soon for extended test drives. Please contact the Acton Ford for more information.
